All signs point towards England confirming a series win in Nottingham. Victory in Cardiff - England's seventh in eight ODIs with Australia - offered smatterings of drama. Though Eoin Morgan's side were made to fight for that 38-run victory in the field, they managed to do so without bowling particularly well, which moves us closer to a peculiar situation.
England may yet complete a seventh successive series win (one-off matches, by definition, not constituting a series of course) without actually learning anything. The batting's great. The bowling less so, but still good. Bairstow's quality. Buttler, too. It's unnecessary nitpicking, but now is the best time to make a few mistakes. It what might be one of the most English statements, perhaps it'll do the team good next summer World Cup if they lose a few? They don't think that way of course - nor should they. Five-nil is very much the scoreline of choice, having missed out on that in Australia when they fell to pieces in Adelaide on Australia Day.
Recent history suggests this should be a high-scoring affair, especially if England bat first. It was here that, inspired by Alex Hales' 171, they notched 444-3 against Pakistan, which still stands as the highest total in men's ODI history. The layout of the ground and the location of the pitch suggests we might be in for similar fireworks on Tuesday.
With that in mind, Australian captain Tim Paine was the last man backing the changing room, spending a large portion of time working with batting coach Graeme Hick to hit straight and big down the ground. It's a sign of how the 33-year-old has had to make things work: never mind leading this team up from the depths, he's got his own game to work on, too.
He was understandably prickly when it was suggested to him on the eve of the series that, though he was in charge, he still needed to justify his selection, especially with Alex Carey waiting in the wings. But in four innings on these shores, he has returned 2, 9, 12 and 15. That last score, off 11 balls, was a failed attempt to offer Shaun Marsh some boundary support in Cardiff, with the number three struggling to do it all on his own after bringing up his fourth ODI hundred. Hence Paine's extra work at clearing the shorter straight dimensions here at Trent Bridge.
This is the site of Paine's only international century: 111 made during a seven-match ODI series that eventually finished six-one to Australia. Right now, he would probably settle for the "one".
WHEN: 2pm BST (6:30pm IST), June 19, 2018
WHERE: Trent Bridge, Nottingham
WHAT TO EXPECT: Temperatures of 22-degrees-celsius and cloud cover, apparently. But that's what was forecast the day before (Monday) and it turned out to be blazing sunshine. More of the same please.
TEAM NEWS
England: Eoin Morgan should return, after he missed the Cardiff ODI with a back spasm. That'll mean a place back on the bench for Sam Billings, who failed to make his start count. Otherwise, it's as you were.
Australia: Billy Stanlake will lead the attack once more, recovering from a lacerated big toe, while Tim Paine will play after he was given the all clear after being hit in the face by a bouncing slower ball in Cardiff on Saturday.Teams:Australia (From): Travis Head, D Arcy Short, Shaun Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Agar, Tim Paine(w/c), Andrew Tye, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Michael Neser, Billy Stanlake, Alex Carey, Nathan LyonEngland (From): Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Jos Buttler(w), Moeen Ali, David Willey, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Jake Ball
